The rocket frog became one of the six sportsmen of the Animal Athletes series, released by the Perth Mint in 2012 as part of its Young Collectors programme.
The series brings together the kangaroo, monarch butterfly, sailfish, cheetah, rhinoceros beetle and rocket frog, each on its own base-metal one-dollar coin. The reverse of this coin shows coloured rocket frogs and the P mintmark; the obverse bears Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Elizabeth II.
The Young Collectors programme had appeared before: in 2011 the Mint issued a Mythical Creatures set limited to 4,000. Each Animal Athletes coin was limited to 7,500, and according to the official figures 5,362 Rocket Frog coins were struck, fewer than the kangaroo, cheetah and butterfly.
The coin needs no explanation and makes a good start to a child’s collection, while for an adult collector it fills a place in the six-coin series or in a collection of amphibians on world coins.
UNC condition: the coin has never been in circulation, there is no wear and the mint lustre is intact.
A coin from the VPcoins catalogue is a gift that is interesting to examine and has a story worth telling.
